August Honeymoon Destinations

Oahu, Hawaii, USA

Best For: Action-Packed Honeymoon

Oahu

Believe it or not, a Hawaii honeymoon is perfect in the summer. Our pick for the best island in August? Oahu.

There is so much to do, from spending time at the luxury hotels and diverse restaurants in the capital city of Honolulu to exploring the islands’ jungles and beaches.

Some of our favorite activities include hiking the 1,000 steps at Koko Crater Railway Trailhead, attending a luau on the beach at Paradise Cove, and learning about WWII history at the Pearl Harbor National Memorial. Bernice Pauahi Bishop Museum is also a must to learn about indigenous culture on the island.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 7-10 Days
Suggested Stay: The Kahala Hotel and Resort

Gombe National Park, Tanzania

Best For: Jungle Hikes

Gombe

If you’re keen on a honeymoon full of wildlife and adventure, then Tanzania is a wonderful choice. We love the idea of a safari in the Serengeti, but August is the perfect time to plan a trip to Gombe National Park.

The beautiful mountains and rainforests covering over 14 square miles of the Tanzania/Congo border are your best chance of seeing chimpanzees in the wild. Take a guided trek in August when the highs are around 80°F, and it rarely rains.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 7-10 Days
Suggested Stay: Mbali Mbali Gombe Lodge

Shikoku, Japan

Best For: History and Culture

Shikoku

If you want to immerse yourself in traditional Japanese culture, it’s hard to find a better option than Shikoku. The small island of Shikoku offers visitors a chance to experience Japanese food, architecture, and arts dating back centuries.

Shikoku is known for its 88 temples that are part of the Buddhist pilgrimage route. Seeing the beautiful pagodas, gardens, and statues at sites like Konsen-ji (金泉寺) is a must.

But an August honeymoon in Shikoku is special because you can attend the Awa Odori Festival. The event has taken place for 400 years, and over 1 million people attend to experience traditional song and dance honoring the dead.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 7-10 Days
Suggested Stay: AoAwo Naruto Resort

Grenada

Best For: All-Inclusive Honeymoon

Grenada

Couples looking for a quiet, adults-only Caribbean honeymoon will be happy to learn that Grenada is the perfect August pick.

While much of the Caribbean Islands suffer through hurricane season, Grenada typically enjoys beautiful weather with sunny days and warm temperatures on land and in the sea.

Plan a Sandals honeymoon where you’ll have direct access to the beautiful Pink Gin Beach. Amenities include scuba lessons, ocean kayaking, and optional butler service at this 5-star resort in paradise.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 7 Days
Suggested Stay: Sandals Grenada All-Inclusive

Serifos, Greece

Best For: Secluded Romance

Serifos

The Cyclades Islands are among the most gorgeous coastal locations in Europe and the perfect place for a honeymoon.

We love Santorini and Mykonos, but if you want a quieter honeymoon, head to Serifos.

You can reach the small island from Athens in 3 hours. What awaits are some of the most idyllic beaches in Greece

Ganema Beach is a perfect example of the blue-green waters and scenic shoreline that make Serifos the best-kept secret in the Cyclades.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 3-5 Days
Suggested Stay:  NŌSTOS Serifos

Tamarindo, Costa Rica

Best For: Rainforests and Beaches

Tamarindo

Costa Rica is a bucket list destination for many couples. While summer is typically rainy around the island, August is a perfect month to choose Tamarindo.

Because it’s on the island’s northwest side along the Pacific, August brings warm temperatures and drier weather than other parts of the country.

You’ll have plenty of sunshine at Playa Conchal, one of the best beaches in the area.

Make time to explore Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve, where the rainy afternoons add to the mystique of walking across the hanging bridges.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 7-10 Days
Suggested Stay: The Westin Reserva Conchal

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

Best For: Honeymoon in a Magical Village

San Miguel de Allende

Planning a Mexico honeymoon in the summer is challenging. It’s hot, humid, and often rainy along the coasts.

But for couples who want to experience incredible architecture, cuisine, and romance, the Pueblo Magico of San Miguel de Allende is a perfect choice. The 16th-century colonial town boasts some of Central Mexico’s best restaurants and architecture to enjoy on your honeymoon..

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 5 Days
Suggested Stay: Rosewood San Miguel de Allende

Ottawa, Canada

Best For: A minimoon

Ottawa

Ottawa, Canada might not be at the top of every couple’s bucket list, but we promise you it offers everything you want out of a honeymoon.

The laid-back city has a ton to do, with some of Canada’s best museums, parks, and restaurants. August is a beautiful month to visit, walk around the city, and take in the sights near Parliament Hill and the nearly 200-year-old outdoor marketplace ByWard Market.

Temperatures average around 78°F for highs, but if it gets too hot, you can take a dip into the Ottawa River at a local beach or visit the 3-floors of art at the stunning National Gallery of Canada.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 5 Days
Suggested Stay: Fairmont Ottawa

Iguaçu Falls, Brazil

Best For: Chasing Waterfalls

Iguazu Falls

Planning a Brazil honeymoon? We’re super jealous. If you’re heading to South America in the winter (yes, it’s winter in August), we think Iguazu Falls on the border of Argentina is the perfect place to honeymoon.

Stay in Foz de Iguaçu on the Brazil side of the park. You can see 80% of the 275 waterfalls from Brazil, so a hike around the 1-mile section of the park offers the best views.

Take a guided walk where you’ll see the 150-metre (490-foot) Devil’s Throat to see the most epic set of falls.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 5 Days
Suggested Stay: Hotel das Cataratas

Busan, South Korea

Best For: Honeymoon Views

Busan

Looking for the most scenic honeymoon in Asia? The ultra-modern city of Busan is the perfect place to snap selfies together over the East Sea.

August is a beautiful month to visit, with temperatures often between 75°F to 85°F. Beaches like Gwangalli Beach are lovely, and you can even rent a stand-up paddleboard.

But our favorite reason for a South Korean honeymoon in Busan is the great photo ops. Whether you’re staring out from 100 floors up at BUSAN X or flying over Busan Bay on the Busan Air Cruise, you’re in for a treat.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 3-5 Days
Suggested Stay: Grand Josun Busan

Dorset, England

Best For: Ancient Coastline and Castles

Dorset

Trying to plan the perfect UK honeymoon? We think Dorset is one of the best locations you can add to a summer holiday in England.

The stretch of coastline called the Jurassic Coast is perfect for adventurous couples who want to hunt for fossils along the stunning coastline of southern England. Durdle Door offers the honeymoon photo you’ve dreamed of, with a 200-foot natural limestone arch peering into the English Channel.

You can also hike around Corfe Castle, an 11th-century fortress that was built for William I the Conqueror.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 5 Days
Suggested Stay: Summer Lodge Country House Hotel

Acadia National Park, Maine, USA

Best For: National Park Honeymoon

Acadia National Park
Sunset over the lighthouse on the cliff. Dramatic seascape with Bass Harbor Head Light Station in Tremont, Acadia National Park, Maine

While many of our favorite USA national parks are sweltering hot, one of the most beautiful is in its prime. Acadia National Park rarely tops 75°F, even in August. This makes hiking around the mysterious islands, rock formations, and waterfalls extra incredible.

Do yourself a favor and hike the 4.2-mile Cadillac North Ridge Trail, where you’ll look out at the Atlantic Ocean and national park from the tallest peak in Acadia. After a long day’s hike, see why Maine lobster is famous worldwide at the Maine Lobster Festival in early August at nearby Rockland.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 5-7 Days
Suggested Stay: Bar Harbor Grand Hotel

Amboseli National Park, Kenya

Best For: Safari Honeymoon

Amboseli

If you’re planning a safari honeymoon, we have great news for you. Kenya is one of the best places to go on a honeymoon in August. We love Masai Mara Reserve (it’s one of our favorite June honeymoons), but Amboseli National Park flies under the radar of many international travelers.

The luxe tents at Elewana Tortilis Camp Amboseli are the perfect landing spot after you spend a full day taking in the wildlife and scenery in the national park. You’ll see elephants, cheetahs, and lions, with a jaw-dropping view of Mount Kilimanjaro framing the scene.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 5-7 Days
Suggested Stay: Elewana Tortilis Camp Amboseli

Lagoa, Portugal

Best For: Beach Honeymoon

Lagoa Portugal

When we think of the best beach vacations, we can’t help but dream up a honeymoon in Portugal. August is a great time to take advantage of the hot weather and warm water along the coastline in the Algarve.

Lagoa is a charming little town near some of our favorite beaches. Looking for the best? Praia da Marinha is a clear winner with its sandy shores and vibrant reefs.

You can also kayak to the Benagil Sea Cave, a beautiful cave with a hole etched into its top from thousands of years at sea.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 710 Days
Suggested Stay: Lagoa Hotel

Outer Banks, North Carolina, USA

Best For: Wedding and Honeymoon Combo

Outer Banks

Whether the TV show of the same name is a guilty pleasure or not, you’ve probably heard of the Outer Banks in recent years. The stretch of barrier islands is home to some of the best beaches, lighthouses, and boutique hotels in North Carolina.

Pack your swimsuit because the beaches at Nags Head are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and even windsurfing.

Though hurricane season is in effect, that doesn’t stop tourists from taking advantage of the warmest temperatures in August, so book early. We love the outer banks as a destination wedding or elopement idea, too.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 3-5 Days
Suggested Stay: Beachwoods Resort

Lake Garda, Italy

Best For: Lakeside Honeymoon

Lake Garda

You’ll want to book in advance (Lake Garda is a very popular European break), but Lake Garda is magical in the summertime.

August brings temperatures between 65°F and 85°F to Italy’s largest lake.

When you’re not splashing around at the beaches or taking in the views of the nearby Dolomites, visit the Roman ruins at the Archaeological site of Grotte di Catullo or head into to a restaurant like La Foresta Ristorante in Sirmione for a memorable meal.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 7-10 Days
Suggested Stay: Lefay Resort & Spa Lago Di Garda

Alaska, USA

Best For: Honeymoon Cruise

Alaska

August is the perfect month to visit Alaska when the temperatures are near the warmest, and you can enjoy 18 hours of daylight.

Planning a honeymoon cruise is the perfect way to see the stunning wildlife and nature along the northern shores.

This 10-day cruise from San Francisco brings you to the rainforests and glaciers of Juneau, gold rush towns like Skagway, and sails through stunning fjords of the Tracy Arm.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 10 days
Suggested Stay: Carnival Cruise Line

De Hoop Nature Reserve, South Africa

Best For: Honeymoon Whale-Watching

Sunset at De Hoop

August is a perfect month to plan an Africa honeymoon. Want a low-key tip on the best honeymoon destination you haven’t heard of? Head to De Hoop Nature Reserve, located on the southern tip of the continent.

This is a great option for travellers who want to plan a South Africa honeymoon in an area with pristine nature and wildlife.

August is a best time to see southern right whales migrating past the 43 miles of coastline. Set up on a sand dune in Koppie Allen with a picnic lunch and bottle of wine from the nearby Cape Winelands for the best views.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 10 Days
Suggested Stay: Morukuru Family De Hoop

Whakapapa, New Zealand

Best For: Honeymoon Ski Trip

Whakapapa

What’s the best place to visit in August for a honeymoon? If you’re itching to hit the slopes, then Whakapapa is an easy choice.

Cruise down any of the nearly 70 ski runs over 1,300 acres on Mount Ruapehu. Not to worry if it’s your first time; August brings great conditions, and there are plenty of mellow runs.

You can fly in and out of Auckland, allowing you to experience the culture and cuisine of New Zealand’s largest city.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 5-7 Days
Suggested Stay: Skotel Alpine Resort

Motu Tautau, French Polynesia

Best For: Overwater Bungalows

Motu Tatau

When we think of honeymoon hotels, overwater bungalows are among the first images we dream up. Le Taha’a by Pearl Resorts in Motu Tautau is your dream accommodation in French Polynesia.

The luxury resort features dinners on the beach, room service delivered by canoe, and adventures on land and at sea.

The small island is perfect in August, with very little rain and high temperatures over 80°F. This makes it perfect for snorkeling at places like Jardin Du Corail – Coral garden, where you can see beautiful tropical fish along the coral reef.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 10 Days
Suggested Stay: Le Taha’a by Pearl Resorts

Saskatchewan, Canada

Best For: Nature and Stargazing

Saskatchewan

Saskatchewan is one of the best August honeymoon destinations for couples who want to see wilderness in Canada.

August brings warm temperatures and longer nights, so you can take advantage of stargazing in places like Grasslands National Park (you might even luck out and see the Northern Lights).

Be sure to check out Prince Albert National Park just north of the vibrant city of Saskatoon, where you can hike the lakes and forests along the nearly 1,500 square mile park.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 10-14 Days
Suggested Stay: Delta Hotels by Marriott Bessborough

Brussels, Belgium

Best For: Honeymoon City Break

Brussels

Looking for a unique honeymoon in Europe? Head to Brussels to enjoy a minimoon in the charming Belgian city.

Whether you’re admiring surrealist paintings at the Magritte Museum or finding the best place to try a local beer (Moeder Lambic Fontainas), Brussels is a perfect choice for an urban honeymoon.

For a romantic dinner, visit Les Brigittines, where you can enjoy traditional Belgian cuisine in a romantic setting.

We love the idea of hitting up Brussels in August when the city streets and historic Grand-Place are full of local events and live music.

Suggested Honeymoon Duration: 3 Days
Suggested Stay: Juliana Hotel Brussels

Practical Tips for Planning Your August Honeymoon

Hanauma Bay on Oahu, Hawaii

Don’t Wait to Plan

August honeymoon destinations fill up fast with tourists of all ages. You’re contending with other couples who just tied the knot, families on holiday, and locals who want to enjoy a summer break.

We’re not saying not to plan an August honeymoon (quite the contrary), but do yourself a favor and plan as far in advance as possible.

Look for Adults-Only Resorts

If you want a chilled-out vibe for your honeymoon, narrow in on Sandals honeymoon hotels or other adults-only hotels. You won’t compete against families on school break and might be surprised by the deals you find.

Choose Destinations With Shorter Summers

We love August honeymoons because many of our favorite destinations experience their warmest weather. If you want to plan a week in Canada or Alaska, you won’t find better weather than August.

Parlay Your Honeymoon into September

September honeymoons are another great choice, and you can save a lot of money if you take your August honeymoon later in the month.

You’ll need to consider Labor Day traffic in the USA, but many destinations around the world become much cheaper at the August/September turn.
